Congratulations David Edwards your are our Delegate of the Month for December

Bristol Oct 14 (3) David Edwards Dec 14
David attended our NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management Course at our training venue in Bristol, and has been nominated by our trainer – Rodger Hope. David is also taking the NEBOSH National General Course and the NEBOSH Fire Safety & Risk Management course as part of the special MoD  career package (NEBOSH Full House Package).  David has been in the Royal Navy for nearly 24years, the last 16 as a chief petty officer marine engineer. When we caught up with David this is what he had to say,
“I have served on all classes of vessel from frigates, destroyers, patrol boats and most recently Minehunters. Most of my deployments have been to the Persian gulf in support of OP Bolton , OP Telic, OP Kipion. I also provided counter submarine support for ships/ submarines involved in the initial invasion of Afghanistan. I consider one of the highlights to be in 2012 when as part of a mine countermeasures group we operated with the Germans, re-supplied from a Japanese support vessel whilst being protected by the Iraqi navy- true testament to how peace and cooperation can be achieved with past enemies.
My interest in health and safety began when I was posted to a facility in London shortly after a fatal accident. I learned the devastating effects of complacency and began to believe that H&S can be applied without being prohibitive and have a real positive benefit. The lessons learned there stayed with me and since then I have always promoted a positive H&S culture wherever I went.
In my spare time I have many interests, mostly outdoors and involving nature which being an engineer has given me a real drive to prevent my own actions as well as those of my colleagues and superiors from harming the environment.
I enjoy cycling (road and mountain), fly fishing, hill walking and climbing.
I enjoy anything to do with nature and am a member of the RSPB and BTO who I have done voluntary surveying work for as part of the Volunteer and farm alliance where we worked in partnership with local farms to identify ways in which they could promote biodiversity (hence increased bird life) on their land. I've also done resident voluntary work on bird reserves.
I am a Christian and my faith ties in with the moral aspects of H&S/Environment- looking after your fellow man and good stewarding of the planet and its resources.
And of course I am a supporter of the Welsh rugby team and my local club- Neath”.
David then went on to say “I am due to leave the RN in December and I'm aiming for employment in an engineering environment preferably with health, safety and environmental responsibilities. I look forward to further developing myself professionally and having more time for my hobbies, serving the church and volunteering for more wildlife organisations.
Depending on what job I get next, I also hope to gain further qualifications in H&S and environment.” We wish David good luck in his search for employment in Civvy street and we are sure he will do well in his exam results. We also look forward to welcoming David back when he decides to increase his health and safety knowledge and career progression.
David is now the last delegate of 2014 and will have his name entered into our prize draw for the £50 M&S voucher. The Winner will be announced next week after the draw takes place on Friday 5th of December.
